His ancestors are originally from Surat, Gujarat. His older brother Ahmed is also a professional cricketer. He began his carrier with KwaZulu Natal Dolphins, a provincial team. Soon after that he represented South Africa as a captain in under-19 Cricket World Cup. He started his international carrier in 2004 in Eden Gardens, Kolkata on November 28th and since then has established himself as a successful cricketer.
